True fir (Abies spp.) susceptibility to Phytophthora root rot incited by Phytophthora cactorum or P. drechsleri [2009-2010]
I tested the susceptibilities of Fraser (Abies fraseri), Canaan (A. balsamea var. phanerolepis), and Nordmann fir (A. nordmanniana) to Phytophthora root rot incited by Phytophthora cactorum or P. drechsleri in a greenhouse experiment in 2009 and an outdoor experiment in raised planting boxes in 2010. Inoculum for the experiments was cultured on rice. Following the experiments roots of diseased and dead plants were plated to detect Phytophthora.
